Introduction to Police Scotland

Pre-session Info

As part of the Initial Training Programme, each group should parade at the start and end of each session. A parade should consist of basic drill training to prepare YV’s for their passing out parade. Information and guidance on drill can be found here.

Introduction

Here you are guided through Module 1, Unit 1 Initial Training Programme (Activity 2).

Outcomes

On completion PSYV's will:

  • have been introduced to the work of Police Scotland

Location

Group room or classroom

Duration

It is anticipated that you will require 1 hour to deliver this lesson. Please consider any time you require to plan/prepare by going over the lesson plan in advance.

Resources

This topic includes the following:

Presentation

Videos (see below)

Quiz (see PSYV Learning Platform)

Activity 1: Starter

Start by having a quick fire round asking YV's what they know about Police Scotland. This will give you an indication of any myths you might need to dispel as well as giving an insight into how much they know. It's also possible that some young people have extremely positive views of the police while others are extremely negative. It's important to make clear that both are valid. The purpose of PSYV however is to build positive relationships with young people.

Activity 2: Presentation & Videos

Go through the presentation and videos. The videos are provided separately for you or you can view them as part of the presentation.

Maggie's story #it'swhatwedo

The National Beat

Andrew's story #it'swhatwedo

The videos below are optional. They are useful if you have extra time or if YV's are interested in finding out about different police units.

A Day in the Life - Police Scotland Dog Unit

A Day in the Life - Police Scotland Dive and Marine Unit

Activity 3: Mind Map

As a group, create a mind-map of all the different jobs Police Officers can be involved in. This can be done in words or pictures, let the group decide.

Discuss the following:

  • What is the role and purpose of Police Scotland?

  • What kind of training is needed?

  • What kind of responsibilities do officers have?

  • How does it feel to be carrying out police duties in Scotland?

  • How does PSYV compliment the day to day work of Police Scotland?

PSYV Award Assessment

FOR THOSE COMPLETING THE CREDIT RATED PSYV AWARD ON MOODLE

The assessment for this activity is a 5-question quiz which can be accessed on Moodle. Please advise youth volunteers on the following points:

  • The quiz is on Moodle under Module 1: Initial Training Programme / Intro to Police Scotland Quiz

  • They have 2 attempts to complete. After this their mentor needs to review their learning before allowing them to re-try.

  • They need to get 4 out of 5 questions correct.

  • One question will require them to carry out research to answer correctly so advise them to have another browser window open or have their phone/tablet to hand.
