This resource guides you through Module 2, Unit 2 Initial Volunteer Experience - Lost & Found


On completion PSYV's will:

  • Learn how to deal with a lost & found incident

It is anticipated that you will require 2 hours to deliver this lesson. Please consider any time you require to plan/prepare by going over the lesson plan in advance.

Activity 1: Sharing

Do you know the laws about lost property?

Ask these questions to see if YV's know the answer (the answers are in the link above):

  • Can you keep something you find?

  • How many weeks to the police keep lost property for when handed in?

  • If you find treasure can you keep it?

  • What if you find goods that are reported stolen?

Start by sharing stories of things that have gone missing. Think about the following:

  • How did you feel?

  • Did you ever retrieve it?

  • How could you have been assisted to be re-united with your lost property?

Activity 2: Exercise

Play a game of Chinese whispers. How much does the message change from beginning to end? Start off passing a simple message. After a few rounds pass a message about someone losing their wallet. How much was lost in translation?

This game highlights we we need to keep accurate records. At events it's likely that people will lose things or find things and report them to YV's. Our recrod keeping is important to maintain consistency.

Activity 3: Exercise

Run an exercise where YV's take it in turn to act out lost and found incidents. Have one person reporting, one person recording the incident in their pocket notebook; while the remainder of the group look to constructively find ways to improve handling the incident.

Make sure the incident is fully recorded to include the following:

  • Details of the person handing in found property

  • Full description of items, cash etc.

  • Identify potential hazards (e.g. sharp items)

  • Is there any identification of the person?

  • Make sure the person handing in the property signs that this details are correct.

  • Note the name and shoulder number of the Police Officer you hand the found item to in your notebook.

  • If someone has reported something lost, ensure the full details are passed to a Police Officer and their name and shoulder number is recorded in your notebook.

Allow time for YV's to upload their pocket notebook entry to the PSYV learning platform. Mentors will be notified on completion.

For information - make YV's aware of the lost property form online, so that they can advise people of what to do when they're not at PSYV events


The assessment for this activity is formative.

Unit 2 Activity 1: Lost & Found YV’s participate in group exercises and record the incident in their pocket notebook.
